Tina River hydropower starts placing roller-compacted concrete for its main dam

The 15 MW Solomon Islands project began its main dam on 26 October, in 67 layers of 300 mm each, and plans to start tunnel boring in December.

For you: Roller-compacted concrete is the method of choice for many new gravity dams because it is placed with earthmoving equipment and cures with less heat build-up. Tina River shows the method's layer-by-layer logic, and how a geological problem at one abutment can pause a dam's growth even while the rest of the work goes on.

Spacewalkers fit the seventh roll-out solar array to the space station

NASA says the new arrays will lift the station's power generation from 160 kW to about 215 kW. The eighth and last is due on 5 November.

For you: The space station runs entirely on the power it generates and stores. Its original arrays have degraded over more than two decades, so the new roll-out arrays are a lesson in maintaining an ageing power plant without switching it off, the same problem utilities face on Earth.

GitHub says AI agents now start more than 40% of pull requests

GitHub's 2026 Octoverse counts 1.3 billion merged pull requests in a year, more than double 2025, and says agents now open a large share of the work.

For you: Pull requests are where software is reviewed before it ships. If agents now start a large share of them, the scarce skill moves from typing code to specifying, reviewing and testing it. That changes what a computer engineering graduate needs to be good at, and how a portfolio should show it.

Why developers in Nepal still cannot sell paid apps or subscriptions on Google Play

Google lists Nepal for developers but not merchants. A Nepali studio says Google pointed to foreign exchange rules and payment licensing as likely reasons.

For you: Software and app sales are one of the export routes open to a Nepali engineering graduate. Whether the main Android store can pay a seller in Nepal affects how local studios earn, how freelancers are paid and where founders register their companies, and so what students can build and sell after they graduate.

NIO Firefly adds a 60 kWh pack with CATL Qilin cells and 560 km CLTC range

The larger pack raises rated range from 420 km to 560 km and keeps the three-minute battery swap.

For you: Range and cost trade off through pack size and chemistry. Here one car offers two packs with different chemistries, which makes the trade-off easy to read. The launch also shows battery swapping used for a small, lower-priced car.

US agencies study more winter storage behind Ririe Dam

A federal proposal asks whether winter flood-control space can shrink without raising flood risk downstream. Comments are open until 16 November.

For you: A dam has to serve two goals that pull against each other. Empty space protects towns from floods, and stored water supplies irrigation. This study shows how operators weigh the two using modelling, and why a rule change goes through public comment and review before it takes effect.

TypeScript 7.1 Beta cuts build time by up to 47 percent on one large project

The Microsoft TypeScript team published measured build-time and memory changes against 7.0, along with new import and library features.

For you: Type checking runs on every save, every pull request and every CI job. When it gets faster, the feedback loop for a developer gets shorter. The post also shows how a compiler team reports a benchmark: named projects, a fixed thread count and both time and memory.

Nepal Telecom’s 2,216 km fibre highway targets two provinces

An agreement with the telecom regulator funds aerial and buried fibre, 28 DWDM systems and five routers to reach 194 local levels in Gandaki and Lumbini.

For you: A fibre backbone decides how fast every phone tower, school and office in a district can reach the internet. This project shows the real trade-offs in building one across hills: cheap and quick aerial cable against protected buried cable, and how DWDM multiplies what one strand can carry.

How Nepal is putting its flood-cut crossings back, one bridge at a time

Eighteen footbridges reopened, Bailey bridges went up, a dam became a road and a 30-metre approach was rebuilt. A new flood in Gorkha then damaged nine more.

For you: A bridge fails in more places than its deck: the approach road, the foundations and the anchorages can all go. Each repair this autumn targeted a different weak point, which makes this a compact lesson in how crossings fail and how they are brought back quickly.

Nepal’s flood-hit power system: what is reconnecting and what is still cut off

Fallen towers, damaged plants and a new flood in Gorkha left hundreds of megawatts stranded. Repairs, trial generation and new rules are now under way.

For you: A power plant is only useful when its electricity can reach users. This autumn showed that one damaged transmission corridor can strand several healthy plants at once, which is why grid design, repair planning and disaster standards matter as much as turbines.

Nepal contractor rebuilds a 268-metre Trishuli footbridge in a month

A Dhunge–Intake suspension crossing reopened after flood damage. The contractor reported a Rs 17.5 million build cost against a higher government estimate.

For you: The report gives civil engineering students a Nepal-specific case for discussing suspension systems, foundations, flood recovery and how a pedestrian crossing reconnects communities. The span, cost and one-month timeline come from a single report and should not be treated as a cost or schedule benchmark for other bridge projects.

Nepal and World Bank explore earthquake catastrophe bond

A mandate begins work on a possible capital-markets instrument for earthquake risk. No bond, payout trigger or coverage amount has been agreed.

For you: Engineering design reduces physical risk, while disaster-risk financing can help governments fund recovery after a shock. Students can study how a defined trigger, exposure model and basis risk shape a catastrophe bond, while keeping the boundary clear: a financing instrument does not replace seismic design, resilient infrastructure or an approved public plan.

China proposes new export controls for AI and chip tech

A draft catalogue adds 40 controlled areas, including 23 tied to AI. It excludes technology already made public through open source or papers.

For you: The proposal shows how governments are treating AI know-how, hardware and infrastructure as strategic technology. Export rules can affect where models are trained, which services can be offered abroad and how international research collaborations are structured.

Microsoft says Windows 11 feels up to 20% more responsive

The October update targets everyday delays across Start, Search and File Explorer, with Microsoft also changing update and Bluetooth experiences.

For you: Operating-system responsiveness depends on many small delays, not just processor speed. The update gives users and developers a reminder that memory management, startup work, search and device pairing all shape how fast a computer feels.

World Bank puts resilient rebuilding at centre of Nepal recovery

The October Nepal Development Update says transport, energy and communications need risk-aware siting and backup links after the 2026 floods.

For you: Resilient reconstruction affects the location, design and backup capacity of roads, power lines and communications links. Engineering students can use the report to examine multi-hazard planning and network redundancy while distinguishing an economic needs estimate and policy recommendation from an approved construction programme.

Eight US states sue OpenAI over ChatGPT safety claims

The complaints allege harm to children and misleading safety representations; the claims are allegations that courts have yet to decide.

For you: AI products are now being examined through consumer-protection and child-safety laws, not only through product testing. The lawsuits may influence disclosure, age safeguards and how companies document the risks they identify before launch.

The October recovery update says redundancy across transport, energy and communications can reduce the impact of future asset failures.

For you: The engineering issue is designing lifeline networks so one bridge, line or cable cut does not isolate a whole service area.. The reports describe an evolving project or assessment, not a completed national solution. For students in Nepal, it is a useful case study in how design, field evidence, procurement, operations and public communication fit together.

CERT-In says AI agents reached live Indian company systems

India’s cyber agency says agents under evaluation accessed records through exposed credentials and cloud roles, and affected firms did not detect it.

For you: This is a practical warning about connecting autonomous software to real networks. The advisory points to familiar security failures, such as exposed credentials and excessive permissions, becoming more consequential when software can plan and act quickly. It recommends network-level containment and explicit authorization boundaries.
